DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Today I finished the main contents page.
I added some more edited pictures.
Ellie
For this photo i used the magic wand tool to select Ellie and make her black and white. I then selected the inverse and changed the colour balance of the background to a blue colour. Next I cropped the photo. I then added text with a black drop shadow.
Dan 2
For this photo I selected Dan and then edited the curves of her photo. I then selected the background and made it black and white. I separately selected her lips and her eyelashes to emphasize the colour and make it more real. I then added text with a red tint to it and put it an angle.
Caroline
I had already edited this photo but I added text to make it consistent with the other pictures.
I also added some more green lines around the text to make it seem more separated. Also i made the text bigger and deleted some of it to make it fit better. Then I added a separate bit of text to fill the gap given an e-mail address for the magazine.
I also added red lines around the pictures on the contents page.
I also finished the front cover.
Firstly I made the main headlines more visible. I then cropped and edited my main picture. I edited a lot of the colours and used the magic wand tool to remove the subjects from the background. I then placed the image into the front cover and positioned the writing around it.
Lastly i finished the Double Page Spread.
I started by editing the main photo on Photoshop. i edited the subjects and then selected the background. I then added a frosted effect to te background.
I then I edited the double page spread on InDesign. I changed the text colour to black to make it seem more professional. I then changed some of the other text to pink and made the sub heading bolder. I also deleted the stars under the title and added a black & sign between the two names.
Today I made some more changes to my front cover and my contents page. I took some pictures and edited them on Photoshop.
FRONT COVER
Jess.
To edit this photo of Jess I firstly used the magic wand tool to crop her out of the background. I then made her into a new layer but selecting cut new layer. I then used the curves tool to edit the colour of Jess’ face and make the picture look more professional. I then added used the gradient tool, in a yellow colour to add the colour tint. next I added some text.
Caroline
With Caroline’ picture I used the magic wand tool and edited the curves of the picture again. I used the magic wand her head band and her sign separately so that I could make the colour’s really sand out. I then used a rainbow gradient tool to create the bubble’s on a new layer.
I also edited the text at the top of the page to math the pictures, to make the magazine more consistent.
CONTENTS PAGE
Courtney
First I cropped the picture to the size I wanted it. I used the magic wand to cut Courtney out of the background and made her into a new layer. I then used the black and white tool and i customised the darkness of different colours in the picture. I then went back to the background layer and used a plain white gradient on it. I then made the gradient slightly less opaque. I then created some text with a large distanced, thick drop shadow I also added a star stamp tool in various sizes to the background.
Caroline 2
I used the magic wan to grab Caroline and used the curves tool to make her look quite dark. I then clicked select inverse and cut her on to a new black layer. I used the magic wand on her eyes and her mouth to make them a more exaggerated colour. I then used a white gradient tool to create the light effect in the background.
Camilla
Firstly I cropped the picture to a new size. I then edited the curves and colour balance of the picture. Next I selected the background using the magic wand tool and uses a “smart blur” filter effect to change the background.
Today I created the article for my double page spread and put in the first picture. I edited my picture using Photoshop and cut it into a layer with a blank background. Then I pasted the layer onto a backstage background I found on google.
Next I created the text for my contents page and added some pictures form google into two of the blank spaces.
For the Front Cover I took a picture and using photoshop put it on a background of a fun fair to create an album cover. These pictures may be changed when I get the chance to take new images.
I also added a red border around the pictures.
Today I assessed my work so far and decided with my tutor that I need to take photos. My idea to use the photography studio has currently back fired and I am in the process of discovering an alternative location to take the photos.
in the mean time I have created the basics of the final version of my Front cover, My contents page and my Double page spread.
I used the style from the mock-up of my contents page to create the house theme for my final drafts.
CONTENTS PAGE
I opened my mock-up contents page and copied the mast-head layer onto a blank document. I decided that I know longer liked the “N” in the masthead, and so I changed it back to a bank gothic style N.
I then copied the “contents page” sub heading layer, duplicated the masthead layer style and pasted it to the sub heading of “contents page”.
I made a text box consisting or stars to try to separate the masthead from the subtitle. I then added pasted the other heading’s layer style onto the “*” text box and changed the main colour to a red. I decided I needed to add a new colour as the green was getting very over powering. I duplicated the “*” layer and put the copy under the subtitle.
Next I created a text box of plain black Gothic Bank font, because I am using Gothic Bank as the house font. I but some green border lines partly around where I won’t the text to go. I then created pink squares and rectangles to place in the spots where my pictures will eventually go.
FRONT COVER
I then started to create my front cover. I duplicated the mast head onto a blank document. I then created a red rectangle to go above the Masthead of the magazine. I created some text in the house green and gave it a white drop shadow effect.
I then created another house red rectangle to put beneath my mast-head. I created more text that included the date and the issue number of the magazine. I duplicated the layer style of the text at the top and pasted onto the text under the mast head.
I created a subheading next. This will be the heading that goes with my main image. I pasted the layer style on both pieces of text and decided that I didn’t want the white outer glow as on the Masthead as it makes the Masthead seem less important.
I then created another red shape to add at the bottom of where my final image will go. I but in some pink squares for future images and created a black bank gothic text with a white outer glow.
I then created a black bank gothic £2.99 text box and rotated it. I added the bar code image I got from Google, this is the same bar code I used in my preliminary task.
After I done this I looked at the style of my contents page and decided that the mast head looked very plain compared to the mast head on my new front cover. I then changed the contents page to match the front cover more by creating more red shapes.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
I created my double page spread on Adobe InDesign. I created text in bank gothic font, using the name of the subjects who will be the main people in my Front cover and double page spread images. I then chose a colour for each of their names. I also created a border around the space i will use for the article and coloured it in my house red.
Next I created some text’s of stars and coloured them in the reverse colours of there names. I then created some sub text in american type writer font, and chose a complimentary colour. I added the name of the magazine, the article and the page number around the edge of the article and put them in the house colours and styles.
I then added boxes and text to show the intended layout of the Double page spread. I created boxes with the word “TEXT” in to show where text will be put and “IMAGE’ to show where I intend to put images.
Today I started my double page spread mock-up. I have an idea to have to people standing next to the writing so they are the length of the text. I also wanted a picture in the middle of the text on the second page.
First I went online a found a picture of a celebrity that I liked. I chose one of Katy Perry. I opened an In design documents and changed the background colour. Then I cropped my picture of Katy Perry on a background with a similar colour of the InDesign background.
Next I started writing out an article on Pages. I then copied and pasted the text into text boxes on the InDesign document. I changed the font and the colours of the text and added an outline on some of the text. I had to rearrange some of the other writing and change the shape of some of the text boxes to get the desired effect.
I then wrote the rest of the article and but it in too separate columns on the facing page. I added a little caption to separate some of the text and I added a continued on the next page box. When I viewed the document on without the guidelines the top of the first page looked plain so I went online and got another picture of Katy Perry to put in the space.
Today I started and finished my mock up for my contents page. I started by creating a new masthead as I decided didn’t like the old one. I created a green line and put it under the new bank Gothic font. I added a drop shadow and a stroke effect to the text on photoshop. I also found a picture of a star on google and put it as the dot above the “i” in Tonik.
Next I searched for some pictures of the bands I listed on the front cover and adjusted the colour curves on the picture of The Wombats. I then added them to the page and re sized them. I also moved the contents page title to the other side of the page and moved the line with it. I did this because it looked better and also because it gave more space for the images.
Next I thought about the pages that I would have in my magazine and I thought about how any pages my magazine would have. Next I placed articles in taking into account that some pages would be adverts. I created the font which was in the previous Prestige Elite STD font and put on a outer glow and stroke effect.
Next I decided that the headline still looked a little bit plain. I first downloaded some headphones which i decided not to use as they didn’t look as good as I first thought. Next I created a new line but this time i kept some of the line Black . I put this line underneath the masthead. I went on line to look for a picture to put with the Masthead and i found some lightning shaped, N looking music notes. I cropped one and used the magic wand to make it into a layer. I then deleted then “n”‘s in the Masthead and put them in there place. I also deleted the star as it was too much. Next made the masthead font bigger by around 10 pts.
I also edited some of the spelling mistakes such as the spaces between he letters.
Today I completed my magazine plan.
I included:
I also started and finished my mock up front cover.
First off I looked for a wide angled lens shot of a band. I found one of somebody call Adam Young, who is in a band call Owl City. I edited the picture in Adobe Photo shop and put it as the background.
Next I created a mast-head using Prestige Elite Font. I added Drop Shadow an Inner Shadow and the sTroke effect. Then I created the text for my headline. It was also Prestige Elite Font and I added a drop shadow and an outer glow.
Next I added some more realistic writing. I also added a Date a Price and the word magazine in black Prestige Elite Font . I added some extra drop shadows in the appropriate places. I also added a bar code.
Next I added some writing telling people of the contents of the magazine and added the appropriate effects. I made this text go with the them colours and the theme font.
I then added more writing as the it looked really bland. I also corrected some minor spelling mistakes.
I have decided to go for my first creative idea to creative idea.
I have chosen this idea because I think I will be able to carry it out the best as I am in my target audience. Also I am most interested in the indie/alternative music so I think I could use a lot of the knowledge I have now.
I will follow my SMART targets to the best of my ability, but at the moment I am falling behind schedule so I may have to work at a faster pace.
Name of the Magazine: Tonic – It has a musical meaning. It’s another name for a Keynote. Also it means something that is refreshing or invigorating and I like this.
Type of magazine: I want the magazine to have all different time periods of music. I think I will go for my first idea and create a magazine which is predominately about indie/alternative music. However I would also like to add music from older time periods.
Target Audience
Interested in music of the alternative/indie genre. Aimed at both boys and girls between 16-25.
Front Cover
I really want a white background for my front cover. I’m thinking about getting a close up wide angled picture of someone with big green/blue eyes wearing bright colours on a white background. Then I want to Photoshop the colours and enhance them so they really stand out. Then I was thinking about having small images around the edge that are at an angle with a bit of colour around them, with small captions.
Contents page
In the contents page I’m thinking about having a classic songs/artists page. This is to show the different genres in the magazine. Also I would like to have a page for reviews, band news and interviews. Also to have gig guides, clothing, a write in page and some features on specific bands.
Double page Spread.
In my research I found some double page spread where the person is the length of the writing. I really like the way this I done and was considering maybe having the person leaning against the writing. Then having big bold lettering in different sizes next to their picture. I would like the image to take up most of one page while the article took up the other.
I have some example pictures of the type of Double page spread layout that I like.
Today I created and posted my presentation of my creative ideas. I explained about three types of magazines I have researched and the inspiration that I got from them.
I talked about the target audience, image ideas and ideas for front covers etc. I looked media packs for related already existing magazines to get and idea of the readership and the target audience. This way I could see the sales and devices that good selling magazines use so had an idea of what to do and what not to do.
I also picked which creative idea I liked most and started to write out a more in-depth plan of what I needed and what I was going to do.
